A road can promise escape while keeping travelers on a route chosen for them. Carnage Road is a useful viewing exercise in that contradiction: pay attention to who controls movement, how an encounter becomes a trap and when a vehicle stops being a refuge. In compact horror, a stretch of ordinary landscape can do more than an elaborate mythology if its distances remain clear. The effect depends on making the next destination seem reachable while steadily reducing the characters' practical choices.
