Jack Frost turns a snowman into a slasher villain and makes the contradiction its governing joke. A cheerful seasonal shape becomes a mobile instrument of elaborate, often tasteless attacks. The film's approach depends on accepting the material possibilities of its monster: snow can melt, reform and occupy spaces a conventional masked killer cannot. The small town holiday setting supplies a bright surface for that nastiness. This is the horror comedy, rather than the family film that shares its title.
