The Last Starfighter turns skill at an arcade cabinet into an invitation to leave a small, constraining world. The fantasy is appealing because the familiar machine has secretly been paying attention to the person nobody else recognizes. Alex's adventure contrasts the comfort of being selected with the fear of what selection demands. Watch how the home setting remains emotionally active after the story moves into space; the journey matters because leaving changes the meaning of the place to which he might return.
