Snake People works in the uneasy borderland between an outsider's investigation and the supernatural world he thinks he can explain. Ritual, altered states and the landscape are essential to its atmosphere. A useful caution in watching is to distinguish what the story claims about a community from what its images actually establish; exoticism can do as much work as plot. The interest lies in the contest between official authority and forms of power that resist the investigator's preferred categories.
